Add support for zip files

What file type Zip and other compression files

What application is using it 7zip

Please attach a sample file here Currently not available (but you can easily make your own)

Motivation It would be really nice beeing able to show the content of zip and other compression files. Then all apps would be able to use this feature without having to open the file in a new tab and/or downloading them, etc. :)

This is not what the viewer is about. It would also not make any sense to show it in a view like the viewer offers :)

@skjnldsv Maybe you should rethink that: for the mail app and attachments it makes sense to me beeing able to look inside a zip file. The same fits for the files app imo.

@skjnldsv Okay, I think I get now what your comment was about. What I meant was beeing able to look inside a zip file with nextcloud viewer and show the content in a column view (or grid view). So maybe this could technically be based on the file picker? :) Really nice would be of course beeing able to also click on files inside these zip files and open them in another viewer instance to click through the content without having to download or unzipping it, etc. ;) Would be a really killer feature especially for the mail app!

I'm really not sure :) @jancborchardt, any opinion?

I'd say this is more something for a dedicated app, but it could use the viewer to display the contents.

Sounds reasonable to me. Could you reopen the issue and move it to the Nextcloud/Server Repository so this idea doesn't get lost? :)

szaimen avatar Nov 08 '19 12:11 szaimen

@szaimen let's leave it there for now :)

skjnldsv avatar Nov 09 '19 09:11 skjnldsv

@szaimen please open a new issue in the server repository, that’s where this would belong. (And yes, it could have simply been moved there, but now there’s a lot of unrelated comments. :)

No, this is not the place! Stop flooding the server repo please.

let's leave this here because this is where people are most likely to find it. The only most logical place to put this would be a dedicated "app ideas for nextcloud" repo!

The thing is that openin a zip file and showing the files in it have nothing to do with the Viewer. That is related to the file list.

That is: When you click on a zip file, it should simply open it as if it is a folder. EDIT: Not in a popup.

A related app which allows manual extraction of zip files: https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/extract So if you like we can also simply close this issue.

Yeah but zip files should get opened in a popup view and this also in other apps like the mail app imo.

I like this idea 👍

I know this app, but extraction isn't the same like opening a zip file in a popup view...

I'm guessing 2 years later this isn't happening
