Rich text formatting disappears once submitted

Steps to reproduce

1. Use a keyboard shortcut to format some text in a chat, ex. ctrl + i to make some text italic
2. Yup, looks italic in the compose box! I'll press enter to send it...
3. ...and now it's just unformatted text in all views

Expected behaviour

At very least, if the text isn't going to be formatted once submitted, it shouldn't be displaying as such before submission

Actual behaviour

I keep formatting habitually, and then being vexed when the formatting is stripped out in the actual chat
