Currently there is a simple unread marker (badge) showing there was a notification. This badge is hidded after opening the window. This is very closed to how notifications in Talk Web are implemented.

It is easily possible to show the number of notifications come while the window was minimized. But the tricky part is to proper decrease the counter after reading the message.

For example:

  1. Minimize the window
  2. Wait for 3 notifications from 3 different chats
  3. The counter shows 3 notifications
  4. Open one chat from the notification

Expected behavior is "The counter shows 2". To archive that we need to reimplement notifications app as well as unread counting in the Talk Web in general. It is planned for the release, but not soon in previews.

I would make the color something that stands out like in MS teams

This badge is not displayed for me. Do I need to activate this somehow? I use Nextcloud.Talk-win32-x64-0.7.0 with Windows 10

Unfortunately, we also don't get a signal or marker on the icon for a new message. What are we doing wrong? We use Nextcloud.Talk-win32-x64-0.9.0 with Windows 10

@jakobroehrl @ShGKme This is still a very important feature that doesn't seem to be included in the 1.0.0 release! Please don't forget it!

1.0.0 is out, it's important but not blocking important, so it will miss for now

It's the main reason why my team refused to use talk. They always missed messages due to notifications that didn't remain visible. You then only know about a message when you are using the PC while you receive the message and here the noise / see the popup. Also you easily forget yet unread messages.

If the feedback helps in any way to the developers, we are in the exact same situation as @pschopen .. although surely there are other extremely important updates, the one reason why we can't yet migrate our company to Talk is because of the notifications/counters on the taskbar and system icons.

I wish we had the expertise to contribute, but we don't. We are very thankful.

We are aware that this feature is important. As well as other features such as call notification or signed distributives released recently, or other features that are not implemented yet, including notifications related.

Talk Desktop is under active development, and the development doesn't stop with 1.0.0 release.

Talk had a lot of new features in a minor 20.1.0 release in between Nextcloud Hub releases. You can read more about it in: https://nextcloud.com/blog/nextcloud-talk-our-open-source-answer-to-microsoft-teams/
