if the markdown description of the link is only clickbait news, I don't want to open the link. if it's a trustful source like mastodon (😁 ) I might want to read along.

On the browsers they take care of showing the target in the bottom left, but in the desktop client we have to show a tooltip

Alternative solution proposal:

  • Handle all external links
  • Open a confirmation dialog before opening a web-page in a web-browser to ask if a user wants to open this page

  • hover-tooltip for external links sound good
  • confirmation dialog sounds quite impacting, so would prefer something else
