Auto-Upload stalls

Open ueismann opened this issue 4 months ago • 18 comments

Steps to reproduce

  1. Enable Automatic Upload (Photos & Videos).
  2. Start large upload (camera roll) of all photos (not just the latest defined by the day the auto-upload is enabled).
  3. Put app to background / phone locks → upload stalls.
  4. Re-enter app → queue stuck; Settings → Advanced freezes.

Tried already: maintenance:repair, files:scan(-app-data), Redis flush (AUTH), new target folder, app reinstall.

Expected behaviour

Upload resumes in background or cleanly continues in foreground.

Actual behaviour

Stalls/queue hang; app settings sometimes freeze.

Only uploading new pics seems to still work, so probably it is a data size problem. Actually the problem started last week during vacation when I tried to sync my photos with unreliable internet connection. I then re-setup the upload because files are still missing and it continuously stalls.

When I enter the settings -> Autoupload menu, I get a warning msg saying that it cannot be activated in the background.

When I access the app's settings in the iPhone's general settings -> Apps menu, I see the "background refresh" switch being on and I cannot switch it off.

Logs

Reasoning or why should it be changed/implemented?

For me Auto Update also seems to be broken, for iOS only. Android still working fine

My issue isn’t that auto upload fails it’s that now auto upload takes over my screen and I cannot do anything until it’s done. Making Nextcloud unusable on iOS 26 beta

No change, it still blocks the entire application

Same thing happens to me. The upload freezes.

Have you checked your iPhone's storage space?

marinofaggiana avatar Oct 06 '25 06:10 marinofaggiana

There’s plenty of space. I didn’t include the translation from Polish. The text on the main screen says “preparing file for upload.” It mostly appears when sending larger videos. The effect is similar to how iMessage behaves when sending big video files.

lineumaciel avatar Oct 06 '25 06:10 lineumaciel

This is normal, it happens because it sends it in chunk mode, and only with the app active.

In summary, the upload in this case will not take place in the background, as it does with photos.

lineumaciel avatar Oct 06 '25 11:10 lineumaciel

Sure that’s fine but we don’t want it to make the app unusable… this is annoying. I have no problem with it needing the app open. It’s the unusable part that’s the issue. In previous versions the file would just get stopped if the app closed and upon reopening it would restart which is imo the preferred way this should work. On Oct 6, 2025, at 4:45 AM, lineumaciel @.***> wrote:lineumaciel left a comment (nextcloud/ios#3713) In summary, the upload in this case will not take place in the background, as it does with photos.

Not only do I still have this issue randomly but now I have a weird upload issue where some uploads fail and it causes every file below that to not upload. Resulting in no files uploading. The only worker around I had found is to stop the auto upload on the errored out files. There needs to be a way when they error out like this that they move to the bottom of the queue and then they restart. Closing the app and reopening does nothing.
