Guests see "set status" menu but can't set status

It seems like guests are not allowed to set their own status. However, they see the menu alright and can also select another status (or even configure a custom one).

Only upon saving their are greeted with the message "There was an error saving the new status".

Also, are guests meant to the the status of regular users, e.g. int he Talk app? Currently this seems to be the case:
