Steps to reproduce

  1. I don't know what happened. That's the problem
  2. One groupfolder which yesterday noon still hat 8 GB of data was completely empty in the evening

Expected behaviour

Tell us what should happen

The mass deletion should be in the activity log. I should be able to see who deleted the files and when.

Actual behaviour

No information in the logs. The files have just disappeared.

Activity for groupfolders is broken anyway and not enabled by default: See https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/configuration_server/activity_configuration.html#activities-in-groupfolders.

A former employee decided to clean out their Windows laptop themself. Lack of understanding means the employee deleted all folders under their Nextcloud Client folder in Windows Explorer.

A lot of folder deletion was synced to the server before the laptop was shut off for the last time.

So now we are restoring data from the thrash bin. We have backup as well, so no real stress.

But where can we observe the activity?

This bug is spot on.

I would think these types of transactions would be candidates for admin_,audit logging:
