Bug description

Most of the time, when I create a new folder in a Nextcloud location, I right click, Create, Folder. And then I type the name of the folder. However, since Nextcloud starts syncing at that moment, two folders end up appearing, one with the name I wrote, and another one with just "New Folder", which I have to manually delete every time.

My files are in an external storage via SMB, and the client is in a Windows 10 machine.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Right click on an empty space in a folder
  2. Select Create, and Folder
  3. Type the name of the folder
  4. Wait a moment for Nextcloud to syncronize ...

Expected behavior

Nextcloud should have synced the newly created folder with the chosen name. Instead, it syncs that folder, and another one called "New Folder".

For your information, it's the same thing with a file that you copy and rename just after. After this operation, you have three versions: the original, the copy with the name you changed and the third copy is the original name with "- Copy"

We do have the same issue now with 3.10.4 and NC 26.0.11.

For some reasone we have not encountered this for the last year although heavily using NC on enterprise scale.

Also I think it's only happening in Group folders. @Mika-6-9 can you confirm this?

Regards

Rob

Hi,

I can confirm this bug with NC 28.0.2 and Windows 11 and NC Client 3.12.0 and Group Folders. It happens when creating a new folder (by the time you rename it a new "new folder" has been created) or when renaming a folder you just created as "new folder". The folder get renamed but it creates a new "new folder" ... If you wait like 10 minutes and do rename one of these "new folder" folders, no problem, renaming occurs flawlessly. Weird. It happens to admins and regular users but not on all instances, I have one where it does not happen (but clients are Macs) and one instance where it does happen on 2 different PC's (on different networks) and on a Mac (Sonoma and NC client 3.12.0).

Hi.

Difficult to say, since it's not every time that the problem occurs and I hardly ever work outside of Group folders.

But actually, it doesn't seem like we have this problem outside of Group folders.

We are working on fixing it, but I was not able to reproduce this in non groupfolders. It seems it only happens on group folders and on Windows. is that the case for everyone?

@camilasan I did only observe this in groupfolders, but on multiple systems, nextcloud versions 27 and 28, clients on Windows and MacOS.

Hi.

In addition we can observer a second behavior which might be connected.

Renaming folders (in group folders) sometimes lead to duplication.

Far less easy to reproduce than then "new folders" issue but I got the feeling there is the same unerlying issue.

Does someone else observe the same?

Regard

Rob

Hi. I just had the problem in a folder that is not a groupfolder.

Mika-6-9 avatar Mar 12 '24 15:03 Mika-6-9

I'm getting this bug as well, specifically in a mounted SMB external share, not a group folder, and only for files. Folders do not duplicate when renamed, they just revert to their original name. A second attempt at either succeeds. It's very strange. My full notes are in https://github.com/nextcloud/desktop/issues/3513#issuecomment-1995614647
