Merge "board details" and "edit board"

Open schiessle opened this issue 6 months ago • 8 comments

Even after years of using Deck, I'm still confused by "board details" and "edit board" options in the three-dot-menu of a Deck board. I always click the wrong one.

I think we should merge them and just have "board details" with a option in the right sidebar to change the board color and name.

Makes sense to me

I don't think we should merge them since they are different functions. I think we can adjust the text to make it more specific. For example using "Edit Title & Color" instead of "Edit board"

But why not just allow to edit it in the "board details" like other board settings? Name and color are just two additional board details, why should they have a special place to edit them?

It sounds reasonable. However, with this approach, users need to take one additional step to edit the board title and color. What do you think? @marcoambrosini

I think it makes sense to unify the entry point for this

with this approach, users need to take one additional step to edit the board title and color.

How often do user change the title and colors of a board? Does it really need to be that quickly accessible or would it be a better benefit to reduce the visual noise by removing the menu item? I vote for moving it into board details.

I would be curious design wise since our sidebar is quite standardized these days and I don't think we have a proper way to fit a color picker in it. Maybe we can do some simple mockups for the unification.

On second thought, I think this is not the best way forward.

"Board details" is a very generic name for this action, so we should probably rename the action into "Share" and open the sharing tab every time. All other sidebar tabs functions are more likely to be used once a user is working on a board, so I think it's fine to require them to opening the board to see them. Action buttons that open other tabs can be present in the ... menu in the top right of the board.

For edit board it's a similar situation. "Edit" is very generic and one would expect more than just changing color and name. Here we could instead have just a "Rename" action, and activate the color picker on rename anyway. For an additional entry point for both renaming and changing color we could make both elements clickable and editable in the header of the board itself.

So my proposal as a check list:

  • [ ] [navigation menu] Rename "board details" action into "Sharing" and only point to the sharing tab
  • [ ] [navigation menu] Rename "Edit" action into "Rename"
  • [ ] [... board menu] Add actions "share" "tags", "deleted items" and "activity"
  • [ ] [Sidebar] Remove the too generic open sidebar button, since now all tabs are linked to the UI directly
  • [ ] [Header] Make both board color and board title clickable and editable so that we have an additional entry point for this feature
