No tray icon on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04
Sorry I cannot remember the update that broke it, but on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 an update removed the tray icon. The app runs in the background and sends notifications, but no tray icon.
I tried both PPA (stable and beta) and the issue is their for both.
The AppImage isn't affected by this bug, but I don't want to use it as it visually badly integrates in the OS.
@loxK does this issue still occur? I assume you know that Gnome’s tray is legacy and shown in the bottom left only? (Except if you use TopIcons: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/495/topicons/)
GNOME is "killing" the system tray. So the GNOME integration should be handled better, probably a "top icon" would be a reasonable alternative.
More info here: https://blogs.gnome.org/aday/2017/08/31/status-icons-and-gnome/
GNOME is also pushing forward on their libcloudprovider work as well: https://gitlab.gnome.org/External/libcloudproviders
Update: Installing the TopIcons extension is at least a short-term alternative. https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/495/topicons/
And that's also why @juliushaertl is working on GNOME/Nextcloud integration. :) Julius, any updates on the file manager integration front, or a blog post people can be referred to?
@jancborchardt A rough summary is at https://blog.juliushaertl.de/index.php/2017/08/28/gsoc-final-report/
@dsommers We are currently doing some final fixes in libcloudproviders. After that I have a patch for the client ready to add support for the libcloudproviders API. I'll keep you updated on that.
Maybe @ivaradi can help on the missing status icon, since he was doing the PPA iirc.
btw ... I'm using RHEL7 - grabbing nextcloud-client via the Fedora EPEL repository, in case that influences things
