Investigate implementing `CloudMediaProvider` for Photo Picker

A cloud media provider provides additional cloud media content to the Android photo picker. Users are able to select photos or videos supplied by the cloud media provider when an app uses ACTION_PICK_IMAGES or ACTION_GET_CONTENT to request media files from the user. A cloud media provider can also give information about albums, which can be browsed in the Android photo picker.

Describe the solution you'd like

Cloud media providers are intended to be apps or services that act as a users' primary source for backing up and retrieving photos and videos from the cloud. If your app has a library of useful content, but it is not typically used as a photo storage solution, you should consider creating a document provider instead.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Additional context

  • Currently some strict qualification requirements (need an OEM to "sponsor us")

This would be really useful. I just came across the "Cloud media app" picker when trying to add a profile picture to an account and was surprised to see that Nextcloud wasn't in the list:

Any movement with this one? Any idea how to push Google to enlist Nextcloud? At the level of code this seems to be fairly simple

This would be monumental. It turns nextcloud from "a place to backup my photos" to a full fledged Google photos replacement.

If Google makes this to complicated, this could be a case for the Digital Markets Act Art. 27 "information by third parties"
