Fast trigger explanation

I am trying to understand how the fast trigger function works. I can enable it but then it is stuck in a loop. I am using the HVP to control the pico EMP through a python notebook.

I need a thin and precise discharge and wanted to give the fast trigger a try. But I cannot seem to make it work as the author expected. I looked at the C code but it wasn't helpful. Do I need to control the trigger through the GPIO instead ?
