Your edit breaks support for both old systems and debian (for mx linux update). MX Linux needs to be a new mode.

try another location that is owned by the current user. Your /tmp directory may have some issues.

As @DwarfFighterCleric pointed out, it may have been due to `1000`. I have updated the code to use `SUDO_USER` instead. It should work.
