Add support for Android TVs
Describe the solution you'd like Add support for Android TVs.
Additional context Thanks to @mlsmaycon (who've sent me the raw Android apk), I've been able to install Netbird on a Firestick 4K Max (Android 9 - FireOs 7).
Small summary of my testings:
- Netbird is fundamentally working
- Netbird is not usable right now without a remote mouse/keyboard because we can't navigate (or at least easily) to menus with only the Firestick remote
- Netbird GUI is not displayed correctly because of resolution of the device
- Logging through SSO is hard since you have to connect using password and possibly MFA (see https://github.com/netbirdio/netbird/issues/888)
Any update on this?
Any news? This is a requirement for a use case I'm working on.
Up! I'm waiting too :)
Hi I'm curious if this will be released in the near future. It seems like it would be a fairly easy thing to do, just modifying the interface to suit a remote for android tv and would set NetBird apart from competitors, there's consumer and business use cases for this - for consumer using jellyfin/plex or other apps through android TV would become secure and easy to manage with no internet exposure needed, and for business they could have TVs that show advertisements or stats run through a VPN rather than pointing to a public URL.
+1 for this

Just fyi, a Netbird employee confirmed it's not planned, so unless someone picks it up... Slack thread
Does anyone have an APK that works? I tried copying the APK from my Pixel 9 over to my Chromecast w/ Google TV, but it wouldn't install.

Interested in this as well.
Yeah, interested as well!

Or at least provide a workaround that could allow me to complete the setup from a remote machine after inputting some random generated code on the netbird website would be acceptable workaround. The apk installed could just pull the configuration I generated or saved on the website.

Could you mention/quote the reason ? It seems that a paid slack account is required to read old disccussions... Thank you

I don't recall the exact words, but they mentioned it was not in their plans, simply.
There is an unofficial netbird client for android, which supports android tv: https://codeberg.org/bg443/JetBird
It's good that a 3rd party app exists but a shame that NetBird aren't planning to do this themselves. For our particular use case, we are waiting for this and the mobile battery drain issues. We have been using Tailscale in the meantime as all these issues are addressed. I am hoping these things do get resolved as we are keen to look more at NetBird. Both teams seem to have very different priorities. An amalgamation of the two would be ideal!

Well now it makes more sense as to why they're less focused (or were) because a third party with more utility existed. Unfortunately I've already moved on to using tailscale for the time being as well.
So sad, I was hoping for an ATV apk too... Netbird, you're a very good european alternative, I don't want to use Tailscale anymore so please we need this, you can do it !!!
I don't understand why this is still an open issue because in the Play Store it says "Support AndroidTV":
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.netbird.client
So issue resolved? GoogleTV is just the latest version of AndroidTV right?

Using Nvidia Shield Tube, I can not find Netbird on the Play Store.

I can not find the apk file in the release section.
On the netbird site it is mentioned that it is available.
APK releases are also available to install directly on your Android device via the NetBird GitHub repository.
For anyone looking for a solution, I've recently found Jetbird. Its an OS, Android TV client for Netbird.
Works great on my Nvidia Shield
While it says it's "Available" when you go to the play store, it does NOT list Android TV devices as being compatible. While I appreciate you can install Netbird or Jetbird via APK - this is not user-friendly and introduces security risks for the average user - will the official client be available through the Google Play Store/Amazon store at some point?
I think once these platforms have it available, there will be no reason not to put everything behind Netbird for security.
This Feature is a must.. I neet to access my devices through my FireTV
Provide at least a option to use a setup key...
Hey guys! Just adding here Im also interested in this feature, though using Jetbird seems to work good on FireTV Stick
Hey folks, we have something in the works to be released very soon:

That sounds great, thanks! However, as long as issue #4341 persists, it’s still unusable for me.
Here is what I have done in the meantime in case someone cant wait: Ive set up a Raspberry Pi and installed the netbird agent. Then I have configured a static route on my router (Unifi) to route a single IP Address to the raspberry pi and then I have configured some iptables rules and routes on the pi to route this traffic via the netbird agent. Now every device in my network, including the TV, can access this remote IP address.
I can give more details if someone is interested.
