Feature Request: Send SMS

Does anyone have an idea regarding the scope and requirements of implementing SMS sending within this app? I think this would be a great platform to develop this on. But a lot of experience would be required implementing SIP/sms gateways. I would like to contribute, but I don't really know where to start.
