target temperature control buttons not visible

I have an issue with this card not showing the buttons to control the target temperature on bot the home assistant app on android and the web interface on the pc. Here is how it looks:

any idea how to force the buttons to be shown in white (or dark for a light theme)? The buttons are there because I can click above or below the target temp and I can get it to change.

this problem came back for me after one of the latest updates to the HA. it was working fine for a bit
