Final round as 'regular' open signups

Open vogon999 opened this issue 11 months ago • 11 comments

Please make it possible to make the last round of a queue signup system just open unlimited manual signups (or if this is easier, do an adjustable number of automatic clicks and then go to unlimited manual signups.)

For example, the system should allow you to set round 1/2/3/4 are automatic clicking, and on round 5 the system just opens up the ability to click manually (or if this is easier, performs (0/1/2/3) last automatic clicks per person and then opens up the ability for unlimited signups manually.)

I'm going to expand this Issue to the more generic: "Allow setting each signup round to use ranked choice or manual signups, rather than having it be a per-convention setting"

I thought we already had this. I know we at least talked about it. Do we not? @nbudin ?

We had talked about it, but currently it's a convention-level setting. I double-checked before my previous update

@marleighnorton We don't currently have it - I basically just built the MVP for Be-Con with the idea that we'd revisit later, and Be-Con didn't need this.

Allow setting each signup round to use ranked choice or manual signups, rather than having it be a per-convention setting

I think I still would want it to be a per-convention setting of whether ranked choice is enabled for this con at all, because having that is useful in a bunch of UIs. I could certainly be persuaded that that's not the way to go, but at least for transitional purposes, I'd like to leave it as a con-level setting with additional settings on each signup round.

My proposal for the signup round setting would be something like:

  • What is the automated action that happens when this signup round begins?
    • Execute ranked choice signups up to the allowed maximum
    • Do nothing

...with the possibility to add more automated actions later on. I think this would effectively let @vogon999 do the thing he's hoping, by creating a round with (say) 3 signups and then another round with the "do nothing" action and unlimited signups that opens a minute later. Does that seem reasonable to everyone?

Yes that would meet my needs just fine, thank you!

vogon999 avatar Jan 30 '25 18:01 vogon999

That sounds reasonable to me, yes. I might suggest that the language be "do nothing, (allows users to perform manual signups up to the set limit)" to make it more clear what that means.

dkapell avatar Jan 30 '25 18:01 dkapell

"No automated signups" is clearer than "Do nothing", but yeah, that's fine.

marleighnorton avatar Jan 30 '25 18:01 marleighnorton

I might advise @vogon999 to schedule the open manual round long enough after the final automated round that folks have a chance to see what they got, but code-wise, this supports both ways.

marleighnorton avatar Jan 30 '25 18:01 marleighnorton

"No automated signups" doesn't really leave space for the hypothetical third option, which nat was trying to leave space for, IMO, but if we're only ever going to have 'run automated signups' and 'no automated signups' then i agree. If this is a dropdown for 'what actions should be taken' , i like 'Execute ranked choice signups up to the allowed maximum' and 'no action', as clear enough

OK, I think this seems feasible and reasonable to implement; we can continue discussing the wording and I don't mind that. I'm going to hold off on starting it until Tapestries signups are complete, just to avoid the risk of possibly hitting them with bugs.

Thanks everyone! Super appreciate your help and insightful discussion :)
