The switch uses this to keep the ethernet connection alive when the console is asleep. You are able to access FTP and wake the console with USB controller adapters like MAGIC NS while using the ethernet adapter. You might also be able to wake the console with a wireless controller using Mission Control

Using this method when undocked is a bad idea for obvious reasons (keeps the SOC awake so Ittl drain the battery)
