Gender-neutral "they"

Open tezzutezzu opened this issue 5 years ago • 8 comments

How shall we translate the gender-neutral "they" in other languages?

I'm looking for a counterpart for the Italian version but I can't find any.

How did you approach this problem for other languages?

I've found this problem already came up with the French translation https://github.com/ncase/anxiety/issues/3

In Slovak this is also a problem, so I just flipped a coin and picked the gender that way. I know that it's kind of stupid but the gender doesn't really matter in this case...I think. Sorry Nicky.

I feel lucky whenever I see these kind of issues, since we just use O for he/she/it in Turkish.

I like the way "The Return of the Obra Dinn" does it and alternates the gender each time the profile is deleted. https://twitter.com/dukope/status/1052971831655727104

I have the same problem in Hebrew. Gonna flip 5 coins.

I just assigned a gender to each character. There's no real gender-neutral pronoun in Spanish, and proposed gender-neutral pronouns like "elle" just sound awkward. The Spanish translation of Undertale also does this.

Okay so, this is gonna be really difficult but, for the needs of the French translation, I implemented a whole gender selection system, once for the main character and once for the party host.

You can see the source code on the repository at https://github.com/NathSoM/anxiety and it works pretty well, and anyone who'd want to is free to copy it, but know that it's probably going to be hell to adapt to your own language, since gendered parts can change from one language to another.

Cheers and good luck

I don´t know is this helping at all but in Finland we only have gender neutral word ´hän´. In Swedish is ´hon´(she), ´han´ (he) and `hen´ (gender neutral)
