refactor configuration parsing

Configuration parsing, even if functional, is really terrible :)

• [ ] could be a lot shorter
• [ ] could be a lot less ghetto
• [ ] should throw better warnings / errors when users writes non-sense
  • [ ] detect duplicate id
  • [ ] warn if the str: or rx: aren't in lowercase
