Is this project abandoned?

Open nmontalva opened this issue 12 years ago • 2 comments

I really liked this service, and I was doing my backups with it on an unattended basis using a cron job. But recently I have notice that is not currently available, and hasn't been for at least some weeks. I just wanted to ask if is currently abandoned and whether there is any plans to establish it.

Thank you very much for developing this (whatever your answer might be).

Hey @nmontalva thank you for dropping a line. This project has been temporarily decommissioned while I've been busy with my day-job.

I'd like to get the tarbackup.com service up and running again, but it requires a re-occurring investment of about $350 per month ($4200/year) to do that. I can't personally afford that investment right now, so I can't move forwards with the hosting of the service.

I'm genuinely saddened that I can't afford the hosting, since there is a tremendous amount of hardware just sitting in my apartment. If I could come up with $4.2K, I'd be more than happy to do the work required to continue the service for the next year.

Of course, you can also set up your own server with the instructions provided in this github project!

Cheers, Nanch

Hi nanch,

I presumed since the very beginning that this project would have expenses difficult to cover by an enthusiast volunteer offering free backup. Am I myself unable to afford that much, otherwise I'd be happy to help.

If you have means to contact people who was using this service, a crowd funding kickstarter project might work (I'd happily contribute).

Anyway, I would like to avail of this opportunity to express my grateful thanks for your efforts while the project was working.

Best,
