[FEATURE REQUEST] Enhanced Moods and Tags UI for Better Music Organization
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
The current moods and tags interface requires users to manually type each mood and tag, separated by commas.
This creates several usability issues:
- Inconsistent tagging: Users often create similar but differently spelled tags (e.g., "Energetic" vs "energetic" vs "high energy"), leading to fragmented organization
- Discovery difficulty: New users don't know what moods/tags are available or what would be useful for their library
- Typing inefficiency: Manually typing long lists of comma-separated values is time-consuming and error-prone
- No standardization: Without suggested categories, users create ad-hoc systems that don't work well with playlist generation features
- Mobile UX issues: Typing long tag lists on mobile keyboards is particularly cumbersome
Describe the solution you'd like
Implement a hybrid tag selection system with the following components:
1. Predefined Tag Categories with Quick Selection
- Add expandable categories above the text fields (Moods, Genres, Decades, Activities, Instruments, etc.)
- Each category shows commonly used tags as tappable chips/buttons
- Selected tags automatically appear in the text field with proper comma separation
- Categories can be collapsed/expanded to save space
2. Smart Autocomplete with Suggestions
- As users type in the text fields, show dropdown suggestions based on:
- Previously used tags in their library
- Common/popular tags from a curated list
- Partial matches of existing tags
- Prevent duplicate tag creation by suggesting existing similar tags
3. Visual Tag Management
- Show currently selected tags as removable chips above or below the text field
- Allow direct removal of tags by tapping an 'X' on each chip
- Provide visual feedback for tag categories (color coding or icons)
4. Import/Export Tag Presets
- Allow users to save and share their tagging schemes
- Provide built-in presets for different music organization styles (genre-focused, mood-focused, activity-based, etc.)
Additional context
Current UI Issues :
- The empty text fields provide no guidance on what to enter
- No indication of existing tags in the user's library
- Rating field shows for e.g. "35" which is very ambiguious, consider adding visual star rating
Example Categories for Quick Selection
- Moods: Energetic, Calm, Happy, Dark, Uplifting, Nostalgic, ...
- Activities: Workout, Study, Party, Driving, Relaxation, Focus, ...
- Genres: Rock, Pop, Electronic, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Metal, ...
- Decades: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s
- Energy: High Energy, Medium Energy, Low Energy, Chill, ...
Benefits:
- Improved consistency in tagging across user's library
- Faster tagging workflow with quick-select options
- Better playlist generation due to standardized tags
- Enhanced user experience with guided tagging suggestions
- Reduced typing errors and duplicate tags
This enhancement would significantly improve Namida's music organization capabilities while maintaining the flexibility of custom tagging that power-users appreciate.
Apps
None that I know of. But some professional DJ softwares have similar features.
very detailed and useful feature request, tags/moods has always been an extra and it's about time to do some reword for them, will use this issue as a reference to the features that should be added
will get into it after finishing other important stuff first tho
Just adding some thoughts: I've been through the gauntlet lately trying to organise my music library. I am going to be using Namida on my phone 🎉 One of my biggest frustrations has been finding Linux and Android supported apps that can play music via dynamic/smart playlists. Like 'Winter Warmers" or "Early Morning Workout". I realise things like genre and mood are subjective but I was trying to use those as a base but as above, having things like Activity, Energy, Key and BPM are also useful. I thought I was onto a winner when I found AcousticBrainz, only to find that it's been shut down and no updates since 2022 :( My automation search continued (since I don't have the time or mental fortitude to manually add such tags and categorisation to thousands of files). Along the way, I've found this: https://musicstax.com which does have some of the sort information needed. No idea if it has an API, but figured I could put it here just in case it's useful to this project. :)
I'm trying to build a weird solution myself (Still adding tags by hand but in a satisfactory method), but I'm not sure how to scale it to handle thousands of songs and still make it easy to use. I'll keep at it and update it here when I've made something usable.
I also made a moods and tags reference guide (from a power-user perspective) :
