Reddit description needs revision

Open JeremyRand opened this issue 6 years ago • 3 comments

The r/Namecoin subreddit's old description has a bunch of problems:

  1. Too much focus on currency applications.
  2. Too much focus on censorship resistance and not enough on MITM resistance.
  3. Too much focus on ICANN and not enough on DNS registries, registrars, and public resolvers.
  4. Endorsement of public centralized inproxies is unacceptable.

This issue is for drafting a new subreddit description.

To improve (4), I suggest the following replacement:

Old text:

Dot bit domains are not currently awarded, hence to resolve domain names, one must have either a copy of the Namecoin block chain, or access to a public DNS server that participates in the Namecoin system.

New text:

.bit domains are "special-use" (not part of the DNS; similar to .onion); hence, to resolve .bit domain names, one must have either a copy of the Namecoin block chain (a full node such as Namecoin Core) or a lightweight SPV client (such as Electrum-NMC or ConsensusJ-Namecoin).

Note that (4) is likely to be a blocker for listing Namecoin on PrivacyTools.io (specifically the item "looking through their documentation and ensuring they don't have suggestions for using NameCoin domains without their software").

I will consider the proposed changes for (4) to be accepted if no NACKs are received within 1 week.

My proposal for (4) has been adopted with no objections expressed either on GitHub or Reddit.
