[proposal] Improve the info menu

Open bobbens opened this issue 3 years ago • 3 comments

The info menu is starting to do things totally outside the scope for which it was originally designed for, especially with ship log and the likes. I think it is in need for an overhaul to make it more usable and the likes. In particular I think the following things should probably be done:

  1. It should be made fullscreen (or at least significantly larger)
  2. Ship and weapon should be merged into one tab
  3. Main, cargo, and standings should be merged into one tab
  4. Ship log should be made larger with no pop-ups. The info itself could be displayed on the right or something like that, with the menus on the left.
  5. Missions should have a bigger and more useful map. Maybe it could also display more mission information and stuff like associated ship logs.

There may also be other ideas that could streamline it more. Merging with the options menu, for example, would be interesting, but it would raise the issue of how to handle the options from the main menu.

Side note, the current "escape" menu probably can and should be merged with the info menu to reduce the number of keybindings and complexity of things.

I don't think it would be nice to have the info menu be fullscreen since that can be oddly disorienting. Even changing the map to fullscreen was like that, and that wasn't even that big of a change.

Other than that, I agree with making it bigger. I would suggest making it the same aspect ratio as the landing menu (16:9), but at the same time, keeping it a bit smaller than the landing menu- just enough so that it's obvious that it's on top of something. I believe that would still qualify as a significant size increase.

Another thing we could add to the missions tab is an autonav button, similar to the one jjustra (a.k.a. bordel#2262 on discord) added to the mission computer in the landing menu.

Well, what I sort of have in mind as a good potential source of inspiration is the interface from nier automata. There's a nice break down at https://www.platinumgames.com/official-blog/article/9624 . They use a fullscreen info menu with nice transitions that, despite being very complex, maps nicely to gamepad controls. Equipment and such is a bit more complex in Naev than nier automata, but I do think it can be used as a pretty good reference. UI_menu_us
