Tags/labels for Flights: Route type

One common element used by many airlines Type of route, this is to indicate if the route is Regional, Short Haul, Long Haul or Ultra Long Haul.

My airline uses this not only as a guide for pilots on the length of the route, but also to restrict novice pilots from flying international routes or long hauls.

I am aware a custom field can be added for this purpose, but I think is a common enough element that should be present by default as an optional element.

Would something generic, like tags, be a good solution?

I think I can add this as tags, is it only for searching/sorting on? Or is there some sort of restriction on the tags
