Dual monitor setup

Open oywino opened this issue 4 years ago • 16 comments

Hi, I recently changed my configuration by adding another high res LCD screen to my computer. So now I have two screens. But I am unable to get one desktop on one screen and another on the other screen. They follow one another, always showing the same desktop.

Is there a way to override this?

Are you referring to the desktop background?

mzomparelli avatar Mar 19 '20 12:03 mzomparelli

Well, not just the background, but also all open windows on that particular desktop. My preference would be that only the currently active screen (the one where my mouse is) would change desktop when I use the mouse hook to click forward/backwards. As it is now, both screens change simultanously. I'd like screen#1 to show desktop #3 while screen #2 stays on desktop #5.

oh I see, yes I think Mac works that way. Unfortunately, Microsoft's Virtual Desktops don't work that way. Making that work would require making my own way to hide and show windows. I'm not sure I want to do this. I feel like having each monitor showing a different desktop would get confusing for me. Microsoft's solution to that is pinning windows and apps to show on all desktops. I think that is much less confusing than what Mac did.

I see. Thanks for your answer. Do you see a conflict of interest between W10 and zVD with the upcoming changes to W10 and multiple desktops as announced by MS, or do you still see that zVD will coexist and compliment/enhance W10?

Can you send me a link about that? I am unaware of any changes that Microsoft is doing.

I found this:

Looks like Microsoft is going to allow naming desktops. I can probably utilize that when it comes or just keep it the way it is. We'll see what happens.

mzomparelli avatar Mar 19 '20 16:03 mzomparelli

It really wouldn't make too much of a difference. I might prefer to keep my naming and disregard Microsoft's. It depends what else they do. If it's just in Task View then I don't care because I never use Task View as I use zVD DesktopView instead.

I think zVD will continue to compliment the OS. zVD has DesktopView, Desktop Timers, Window Timers, customized hotkeys, etc. I will do my best to ensure these things continue to function as expected.

mzomparelli avatar Mar 19 '20 17:03 mzomparelli

I will test insider builds to make sure zVD runs with these changes to the OS. This will likely require a new zVD build to handle so maybe don't update your OS until I report back here if you rely on zVD.

mzomparelli avatar Mar 19 '20 17:03 mzomparelli

I do indeed! zVD has become my most reliable and dependable everyday companion. I'm glad your dedication will continue :-)

I love hearing that! Thank you! I also rely heavily on zVD so I hope that also helps reassure you in zVD's continued support.

I have great news! I just tested insider build and as you can see I can rename Desktops. zVD is working just fine without a new build.

I must say so myself that zVD still does this better.

Just keep in mind that naming desktops in Task View and Desktop View are separate (at least for now).

mzomparelli avatar Mar 19 '20 17:03 mzomparelli

Perhaps a good idea would be to "sync" zVD Desktop names with MS Task View names ? What I mean, is ; If zVD can read (detect) names given directly to Task View Desktops, then those can be used and zVD is updated automatically.
It would be super if names given to zVD desktops directly could be written back to name Task View desktops also (two-way sync), but i guess MS has not opened that possibility in their API (?)

Currently with windows 2004 it is possible to get (not set) the name for the current virtual desktop. I wrote about it in a other github project.

Thanks Lutz, your findings are helpful. I’ll have a look and see what I can do about using this for zVD.
