Can't get tls working with proftpd on myvesta

Followed standard instructions, then:

Status: Connecting to my.server-name.com:21... Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Response: 220 FTP Server ready. Command: AUTH TLS Response: 500 AUTH not understood Command: AUTH SSL Response: 500 AUTH not understood Error: Critical error: Could not connect to server

But standard ftp without encryption works fine. What am I missing?
