potential improvements to the photo review process
It's unlikely I'll have much time to work any further on the photo review process over the next week, but this ticket is to record some extra small improvements that might help:
- [ ] Add a "flag for discussion" option - often you notice a submission is problematic, but don't want other volunteers to go in and approve or reject it without further discussion.
- [x] Record the text of the rejection message; at the moment we'll only see this when someone replies quoting the message and it would be a good idea to record this in case of any disputes. (We could just Cc the SUPPORT_EMAIL address on all rejections.)
- [x] Include a reverse Google image search to look for the source of images
- [ ] If people are selecting "from social media or official campaign page", make them enter a URL
- [ ] Include the 2015 constituency on the review page and in the flash message after reviewing. (This is partly because it's often interesting to see how complete a constituency is in photo terms!)
- [ ] Auto-rotate photos with EXIF orientation information on upload?
- [ ] Possibly upload the original photo as well as the cropped version, but pushed to the back of the image array. In the future we might change the candidate page to show all pictures of them, in which case this might be appreciated (or useful for the record in the future).
The photo review process seems to be going slowly; I uploaded one a week or so ago which is not yet present, and I've heard reports of others having problems. Do you need any help?
Gerv
@gerv Thank-you for the offer - we've cleared the photo review queue now with a big effort over the weekend (500-ish photos reviewed) so I think we're on top of it again.
I'm not sure if this relates to the "Auto-rotate photos with EXIF orientation information on upload?" item above, but I've twice had to reject a candidate's attempts to upload, eg here.
Another website I'm involved with does auto-rotate using EXIF but there are still issues with one user's iPhone photos so they uploaded some example rotated images here with the comment "All of the older photos should have the same rotation (I seem to always handle the phone the same way). I’ve then taken four photos at the end of my road, in each of the possible rotations to give you a full set of test data for iPhone rotations."
One fix would be to enable moderators to rotate images within the /moderation/photo/review/ page.
A similar issue (some iDevices have non-standard EXIF rotation data) was experienced here and fixed using this library.
