Highlight where representatives have declared interests during proceedings
One of the recommendations of the MPs’ Outside Interests report by the Committee on Standards in Public Life in July 2018 was:
The Parliamentary Digital Service should develop and implement a digital tool to identify where MPs have declared interests during Parliamentary proceedings.
TheyWorkForYou might be able to do something along these lines.
- Just a search for "entry in the register" goes a long way to minimally implementing the recommendation https://www.theyworkforyou.com/search/?q=%22entry+in+the+register%22
This could be improved by:
- Cleverer search terms to catch more cases
- Linking from phrases like "I draw attention to my entry in the register of interests" to the [relevant bit of the] register.
- On an MP or other rep's page we could link to a search for declarations in debates within their speeches eg. https://www.theyworkforyou.com/search/?q=%22entry+in+the+register%22&pid=10777 (Should this be shown if there are no hits?).
Thoughts:
- Is this an area where a bit of manual work would add value to what's done automatically? Doing a bit of journalism, triggered by such declarations.
- Do representatives sometimes reveal an interest in a debate which should already be registered, but isn't, can we flag those?
