Unable to install ML4W dotfiles

Open kghosh222 opened this issue 4 months ago • 16 comments

After the ML4W dotfiles were moved from AUR to Flathub, I have been unable to install the dotfiles on CachyOS. I have tried five times and failed four times with different reasons. I got through the installation only once, but met with an unusable black screen. I was forced to abandon installing wayland, and have had to move to Plasma.

Thanks for testing. I assume, that you run the setup.sh script offered in the Dotfiles Installer to install all dependencies? Do you have an Nvidia Card? Can you share a screenshot from your terminal with

cd .config
ls -al

Hi, Maybe GitHub is not allowing attachments. Basically, when I run:

flatpak install flathub com.ml4w.dotfileinstaller

The error is: nothing matches com.ml4w.dotfileinstaller in remote flathub.

Please try flatpak install flathub com.ml4w.dotfilesinstaller

https://flathub.org/apps/com.ml4w.dotfilesinstaller

Oops, that missing s in dotfile_s_installer !!

Well, succeeded in running the command, but I don't think it installed anything.

I remember earlier there used to be a few folders like ml4w, dotfiles, and others. I don't see any folders like them.

The new folder is .mydotfiles

Please cd into .config and run ls -al to see if the symlinks are installed correctly to the new folder.

mylinuxforwork avatar Aug 16 '25 12:08 mylinuxforwork

Hi, Repeated the process again. This time, a browser window opened but it was confusing because it had some buttons inside the page, and one on the bottom status bar. I ignored the browser buttons, and used only the one on the bottom status bar. Installation went fine, but there was no indication in either the browser window or the terminal that the process has completed.

After rebooting, I got a black screen. Initially, no key combination was working, like meta+enter, or meta+B or any other combination. My cursor was also locked up inside the VM. There was no panel on the desktop. After some time, meta+B started working, and I could open a browser. Meta+enter still would not open the terminal. After some more trime, ctrl+meta+enter opened Rofi, and I could open Alacritty. Then I could shutdown.

In my opinion, the initial process of installing the dotfiles was much simpler.

You’re running it in a VM? What do you mean with browser window opened?

mylinuxforwork avatar Aug 17 '25 19:08 mylinuxforwork

Yes, I am running in a VM.

These are the steps I followed:

  1. Started with https://github.com/mylinuxforwork/dotfiles Clicked on the badge - DOTFILES INSTALLER

  2. Landed on: https://mylinuxforwork.github.io/dotfiles-installer/ Clicked on the Install button at the top.

  3. Landed on: https://mylinuxforwork.github.io/dotfiles-installer/getting-started/install Clicked on the badge - GET IT ON FLATHUB

  4. Landed on: https://flathub.org/apps/com.ml4w.dotfilesinstaller Clicked on Install button - Nothing happens. Clicked on downarrow beside Install button - Manual Install instructions appeared.

  5. In terminal, installed flatpak, then ran: flatpak install flathub com.ml4w.dotfilesinstaller flatpak run com.ml4w.dotfilesinstaller

  6. The second command opens a sort of browser/terminal window named Dotfiles Installer asking for URL of remote dotinstall files or path to a local .dotinst file. Initially, I was totally stumped as to what is required. Then I hunted other sites and dug out the two URLs for stable release and rolling release of ML4w dotfiles. I copied the URL for the rolling release into the .dotinst file location.

  7. There were other buttons, but I ignored them and used only the button at the bottom status bar of the Dotfiles Installer. This completed the installation, but there was no indication of completion. I rebooted the system.

  8. Got a black screen, without any bar or button. Initially, I could activate a browser window with Meta+B. After some more tries, I could get Rofi through Ctrl+Meta+Enter, from which I could activate Alacritty. Meta+Enter does not open any terminal.

Thanks for the detailed description. Did you run the setup script that is offered after downloading the dotfiles by the Dotfiles Installer? This will install all dependencies.

mylinuxforwork avatar Aug 18 '25 18:08 mylinuxforwork

@kghosh222 Any updates here? I have tested the 2.9.9.1 successfully on Arch, Fedora and openSuse.

mylinuxforwork avatar Aug 27 '25 14:08 mylinuxforwork

Hi, The Dotfiles installer did not offer any setup script at the end of the downloading, Where sould I look for?

After the installation of the dotfiles installer you have to start the Dotfiles Installer. THen select one of the links from here https://mylinuxforwork.github.io/dotfiles/ (scroll down) and paste it into the field. CLick on Load. THis will show the Dotfiles Info page. THen click on Download. Then a window ipens and offers the path to the setup script. Just copy the path into your terminal and execute.

Hi Stephan,

Got it at last. Found your video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsKpbn8dfMs, and followed it.

ML4W is active on CachyOS in virtual manager. Only, the last step, "Installation Complete", did not appear, although I waited for a long time. Finally, clicked on Cancel and rebooted. And, ML4W was active.

Now, I have a question. In my bare metal installation of CachyOS, I am currently using KDE. Can I install Hyprland on top of KDE and then install ML4W dotfiles also? Will it break my system?

Thanks for the great job. In between, I tried Omarchy - but did not like it, prefer ML4W.
