Lowercase alphabetical footnotes are changed to numerical on convertToHtml

We've discovered that lowercase alphabetical footnotes in Word are converted to numerical footnotes in HTML. Is it possible to maintain the footnote format that is set in Word?

Looking at the document.xml for a sample docx, I'm seeing <w:footnotePr><w:numFmt="lowerLetter"/></w:footnotePr>. That seems to indicate the footnote is a lowercase alphabetical value, but I can't say for certain.
