Allow user to disable Properties pop-up menus

Open Redondoguy opened this issue 1 month ago • 8 comments

Your idea

Allow the user to disable any Properties pop-up menu that obscures the score viewing area. This can be done in the Preferences tab.

Problem to be solved

These large Properties pop-up menus obscure a significant part of the score. When I click text in a frame, I can not read the score to update the text. This is a nuisance and I would prefer to disable the pop-up. Note the Properties menu is easy to access via a tab off to the side and the pop-up is redundant.

Prior art

Finale does not use pop-ups that obscure the score.

Additional context

These Properties pop-ups started with version 4.6.

I'm personally fine with an option to disable them but note that the text popup disappears if you click somewhere else in the UI. So in the cases where you need to see more of the score in order to remember what you intended to type, it's easy enough to do

I agree but when I click back to enter the text the pop-up reappears so I must commit the entire text to memory versus typing what I can see on the screen or going back multiple times which is a nuisance.

You don't need to click back to enter text - the cursor is still active. Be sure you are click somewhere outside the score window, like the empty space on a toolbar. So you can immediately resume typing.

But I'm curious about your use case here, as it seems quite unusual - or perhaps, you are missing an opportunity to take advantage of copy & paste. It sounds like you are saying the text you want to type already exists in the score, and now you simply want to type it again in another location. What is this text, and why not simply use copy & paste?

Yes that works to click outside the score area to keep the cursor active. You are amazing in all the help you give people. I list all the chord symbols in a vertical frame at the bottom of each page. This makes it possible to play the entire song chords without jumping to other pages which can be difficult on stage. I have been unable to copy/paste chord symbols into a frame so I do it manually and need to see them.

The frame text are matrices of chord symbols, and I often jump around it with the mouse click which brings up the pop-up. The arrows keep the cursor active but more effort. I'm usually zoomed out to see multiple pages and the pop-up obscures multiple systems.

Would it be possible to include a chord symbol frame into Musescore that would change keys during Transposition? Example: include a matrix of chorus chord symbols at the bottom of the verse. This would allow the person to play the entire song without page changes which are difficult on stage. Many bands are now using tablets onstage and this feature would be valuable.

I’m not totally understanding the question - something about the new feature to automatically place chord fretboard diagrams in a frame? I am not sure what that has to do with text, though. Anyhow, probably better to ask for help with that on the Supprot forum at MuseScore.org.

@Redondoguy Could you include a screenshot or recording of the frame containing chord symbols that you're talking about?

See the attached picture. This song has Verse A, Verse B, and Chorus. I put the melody of each part on a single page and a vertical frame containing the Chord Symbols for the other parts below on same page. This allows the musician to take a melody break on Verse A and then continue playing the other parts without page flipping which is difficult on stage. It would be nice if the Chord Symbols in the frame could change with the key changes. Thanks
