You see that space as empty simply due to your current setup of layers (which is linear). For layers tree - there will be appropriate icon for expanding/collapsing tree items.
Hiding / showing this space for linear case... well, it looks confusing. For the case when list is flat - yes, potentially it's possible to save some space. I'll take a look how it might be - not sure so far that will be obvious to the user why list items are in different positions, however.

This not a big deal. This is one of the last things to look into. Please,, Let's spend more time on the more important things.Meanwhile, this version is very good.Thank you for your efforts.
