[MU4 Issue] [Muse Sounds?] Various Bb/A clarinet playback issues

Open Fristover opened this issue 2 years ago • 4 comments

Describe the bug Bb/A clarinet seems to have lots of issues on specific notes (I'll talk about written pitches to make it simple):

  • Attack feels slow overall - p and lower
  • ~~Attacked F5 has a key click that shouldn't be there - p and lower~~ FIXED
  • G5 and A#5 have a low pitched sound (like a student learning how to play those notes or not pressing the 12th key correctly) - mf and lower
  • A#5 sounds really different from surrounding notes - ~~f and up~~ Seems to happen at every dynamic now
  • ~~D#6 sounds like player is trying to do a scoop - mf and up~~ Seems to be fixed
  • E6 is the highest note (this is known already but still, really?)
  • Something around D#5 and F5 is weird, like there's samples overlapping sometimes - p and lower
  • ~~Attacked~~ (now it happens with slurs too) F#3 and F#4 sound terrible, (almost like a squeak?) - mp and up
  • E3 kinda sounds like 2 samples playing at the same time but not later in the score - p and lower
  • There's no low E for A clarinet (known too but 😢)
  • Notes from (including) D5 to A5 feel extremely thin and quiet - mp
  • Excessive key noises everywhere but specially with slurred notes over the break (Bb4-B4 and C6-C#6)
  • Notes over the break sound pretty bad when slurred, with the start of the second note often being delayed
  • Many slurred intervals are out of tune (I might open a separate issue for those)
  • F3 and E3 have excessive air sound when being slurred down - mp and up

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Open attached score (remove .zip)

ugh2.mscz (2).zip

  1. Click Play
  2. See errors

Expected behavior Everything should play just fine

Platform information

  • OS: Windows 11

Additional context Most of these sound just like sample or player issues, like the high or the almost squeaking notes.

If it would be helpful, I have transcribed a version of Mozart's clarinet concerto that I would be happy to upload that shows similar issues. Some other minor issues I've noticed are the following:

  • occasional inconsistent dynamics between stacatto notes and non-stacatto
  • bad dynamic consistency between octaves.
  • excessive finger sloppiness in fast pieces

I've updated this issue with more problems that have popped up with later updates and things that have changed since the initial post.

I agree that the key noises are excessive. This is very noticeable in slow passages where the player usually can change fingerings much more carefully and never really needs to hit keys, which is what it currently sounds like. In first order, the key noise should instead be correlated more to fingering speed. But still, although the key noise provides extra realism, which I like, it might be better to have an option to mute them, as one often does not even notice them in concerts and I don't think composers care too much about these noises, but others can correct me.

Yeah I've noticed that the clarinets especially are basically silent at the "p" dynamic (including the bass clarinet), which makes it really hard to use Muse Sounds for the reed quintet I'm writing. As a work around, I've had to replace the Bb clarinet with the viola sound and the bass clarinet (and bassoon honestly bc that instrument has volume issues too) with a the cello just so they can be heard. I'm really hoping these volume issues get fixed, its really one of the only things that are holding MS4 back for me.

It seems like this problem still exists?

For me, there are some odd dissonances, weird accents, bad tone, and just overall many oddities. It's easier for me to explain if I just attach the files I think:

(Remove the .zip once downloaded, video also attached). Robin Solo for Git.mscz.zip

Here is my OS stuff: Windows 10 Version 2009 or later, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 4.1.1-232071203, revision: github-musescore-musescore-e4d1ddf

(Another) Edit: It seems like, once I add some phrasing, the slur & staccato is interpreted as an accent, which is incorrect. Let me know if this should be logged as a separate issue? https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/assets/102642087/d7415b3e-ffb7-4389-a61c-82eba1787f68
