Make platform gender aware

Open flbulgarelli opened this issue 8 years ago • 14 comments

Since social login provides gender information, we could add gender customization capabilities to atheneum in order to customize labels both in platform captions and content texts.

For example, we tend to use gender-agnostic words both in titles and content, but this is sometimes limiting. We could actually use gender specific translations if we use that user information.

Also, we could add special tags to the content in bibliotheca, in order to use a word or another depending on the gender, e.g.:

¡Wow, el programa explotó! ¿Estás «sorprendida|sorprendido»?

We could also use default gender agnostic translations when such information is not provided in username/password authentication.

A possible downside of this approach is that maybe some users may feel it invasive

I don't think this is important

It's a nice feature, and definitively something that could generate even more engagement with our users.

About the implementation, I don't think that gender info is very reliable, we should ask for it when the user logs in for the first time.

I think this could work, BUT, I see an issue here: in a lot of cases we should ask for gender to the user.

And I think this is not viable, it sounds creepy to me to ask gender unless the user is willing to set it.

Unless.... we don't ask user for it, and we add it as a preference in the profile he/she can customize whenever he/she wants.

We already had this discussion... and we agreed (or I thought so) that we should explain them why are we asking for this information with a message like "We think this information is important and we will use to display the proper words when refering to (...)". I would even show an example of use in the same screen.

@flbulgarelli @lauramangifesta Now that we DO know the gender of the users, how do feel about implementing this one? There are places that make a lot of sense, like changing "Mentor" for "Mentora" when the user informed that its female. (cc @felipecalvo)

Making this change in content is a bit more difficult (and we already bypassed this issue by making content gender agnostic). I'm focusing this proposal on platform translations mainly.

Its nice when after 4 years of discussions we finally reach an agreement
