[Question] Is Toolpad deprecated?

Open pablospe opened this issue 3 months ago • 3 comments

Based on this message from this PR: https://github.com/mui/toolpad/pull/5109

[!IMPORTANT] At the moment the maintainers are primarily focused on other projects and are not actively adding new features to Toolpad Core. They may not be able to respond in a timely manner to issues or pull requests.

Should I assume this is deprecated?

This would be good to know as it no longer appears in any of the website menus or navigation.

Hi @pablospe @waynedyck ,

Should I assume this is deprecated?

I'll break it down into following topics:

  • Current state: The last release version is stable and can still be used. However, we don’t recommend adopting it for new projects since we are no longer addressing issues or feature requests. This is also why it has been removed from our website.
  • Warning period: We don’t intend to remove it until we have a proper alternative in place. So, there’s no immediate deprecation timeline.
  • Future Plans: The long-term direction for dashboard components is yet to be decided but most likely they'll be built into our UI libraries (core or advanced)

I'm not sure if you've seen MUI Chat yet, it's a prompt-based UI builder specialized to use MUI components. While currently in alpha, in future, it's aimed to be used for quickly scaffolding admin dashboards using lower-level MUI primitives that can be customized and ejected.

Overall, given the rise of genAI solutions, we see greater potential for success in AI-assisted UI development. That’s why we paused Toolpad to explore faster, more state-of-the-art approaches to solving the same challenges. With that said, I’d love to hear more about your use case and your thoughts on the proposed alternative.

@prakhargupta1 thanks for the update; I appreciate it. I'll probably back my project out from using Toolpad and go back to using an App Bar and Drawer approach or make use of this getting started template, https://github.com/mui/material-ui/tree/v7.3.2/docs/data/material/getting-started/templates/crud-dashboard instead. I liked the Toolpad approach as it meant less code for me to write, however, I found it a bit more difficult to customize. I knew using it was going to be a trade-off.

I had not seen MUI Chat yet. I probably won't use it as I am not a fan of genAI solutions. I might just be old school, however, I find I have a better understanding of what the code is doing as I write and tinker with it myself.
