What is MSYS2 license?

Open MariuszCwikla opened this issue 3 years ago • 5 comments

Hello, what is license for MSYS2 itself? I see https://github.com/msys2/MINGW-packages has BSD-3 license, but I can't find license for MSYS2 as a whole, neither here nor on the website. My company requires that I provide license for the software before I can install it.

MSYS2 doesn't really have a license. My work in the installers is all public domain though. MSYS2, as a software distro comprises many bits of software all licensed under their own terms. One exception to that is the msys2-runtime component and everything that links to it. As it is a fork of Cygwin if falls under the same terms as Cygwin. This means any package not beginning mingw-w64- falls under these terms.

You need to consider the license for each package you would install with MSYS2 and ask your company in each case if that license is allowed.

The license of the recipes has no bearing on the license of the actual packages either.

Thank you for your work. I use the installer as a basis for my own project. I will document the installer as such (to be in public domain).

Is it possible to update the project here by marking this project to be in the Public Domain?

Note that public domain doesn't mean much globally, and for example is not valid in europe, so I'd avoid it.

We should probably have a page on license information (or lack thereof) on the website, so moving this there.
