I finally got it: STR: - activate RefLog - close GE - start two instances - turn RefLog off in first instance - try to turn off in second instance...

BTW: Just noticed  does not work. It has been off all the time.

Could this be related to our adaptation of the `Application.UserAppDataPath` from "Git Extensions" to "GitExtensions" for backwards compatibility. GE still creates an empty folder "Git Extensions" at least.
