Looking to use elastic search in a grails project. and was debating wether or not to just use the groovy connector. Grails plugin site says last updated 2011.

There are snapshots released in 2013 on the grails repository, but I would recommand going with the gorm fork of the plugin (http://grails.org/plugin/elasticsearch-gorm) which was released last month for now.
