Any ETA on that? What needs to happen for 4S support to come? Currently have a 4S stuck at the Apple logo with some much-needed data.

Can't be done (yet) using publicly available exploits. There's a known DFU mode exploit for A4 (and lower) devices, there's nothing (public) yet for the A5. User-mode jailbreaks won't help if the phone doesn't boot.

Alright, will wait for an update and use a backup phone 'til then. Keep up the good work! Everyone should know about this, would save a lot of headaches for a lot of people.

You could try using make_noerase_ipsw.py ( http://code.google.com/p/iphonetunnel-usbmuxconnectbyport/source/browse/trunk/make_noerase_ipsw/make_noerase_ipsw.py ).
Just make sure it works on someone else's (backed up) 4S first. It should perform an upgrade mode restore even from DFU mode.
If that fails, your restore log will probably have some relevant info on the reasons it failed (e.g. NAND write errors, fsck failure, etc). You'll still be able to ssh later if an A5 exploit is found, because upgrader bails out on failure and leaves the volumes intact.

Well, I found a good friend with a 4S, so we backed up his phone, ran make_noerase_ipsw_r1.exe against a 5.1.1 ipsw, then put the phone in DFU mode and attempted to shift + restore to the upgrade-only ipsw. iTunes didn't let it restore! :(
