clearly document limitations of backup tool

Open khimaros opened this issue 2 years ago • 6 comments

there are some significant limitations to open android backup today which are not called out in the README or anywhere else i could find.

in particular:

  • app data is not backed up at all
  • there is no way to restore the CSV file that is produced from SMS backup

for users who are relying on this tool for critical backups, these are very significant limitations which they should be made aware of sooner rather than later (such as after resetting their device).

This is mentioned in both the README as well as the website.

It'll be clarified, thanks.

perhaps also worth noting that received messages don't seem to be backed up.

That sounds like a bug, possibly with the upstream sms library. Could you please include information about your device and some logs?

This occurred on a Pixel 6a running Android 14 beta 3. Only sent messages were included in the generated .csv file. Unfortunately I didn't save logs from the export.

Can't reproduce on Android virtual devices running Android 13 and 14 :\ Are the messages sent through SMS or RCS 'chat features'? What messaging apps are you using (AOSP Messages, Google Messages, or something else)?

Mix of RCS/SMS, using Google Messages
