How do you build / test this project?

Hi,

My maven foo is very rusty. When I try to run the tests for the most recent release (after removing the skip tests property), I get a lot of test failures. Is this expected? Initially I was trying with java 11 and that causes some part of maven to throw an NPE before it even starts running the tests.
