Adjustable black level to address projector- as well as mastering-issues
Expected behavior of the wanted feature
Hi,
I am having two issues which might perhaps be solved with one simple feature.
1: Most JVC-Projectors (I guess other brands as well) show 17 or even 18 as black already, they don't manage to display the usual black clipping stairs down to 16.
2: There seems to be a trend in mastering to raise the black levels of content, especially in recent productions. I find that very annoying, as it really degrades the picture. I often see opening titles fade to dark-grey instead of black. It's not a setup-issue, my setup is properly calibrated and I only see it on a minority of titles. Most titles have spot-on blacks.
I guess I am not the only one with these issues. They might both be addressed wit a simple feature: Shift the black point to a different value than 16 eg. shift all 16 values to 18 (adjustable) and scale from there all the way to the top. This should help the PJ-issue and I guess it might also do well on the raised black levels.
I've seen this feature elsewhere, years ago, and found it really useful with PJ-setups. Seeing more and more titles with raised blacks and looking for a solution I remembered this. Might be a nice feature for some people.
