I think this could work for our current release system, but I'm currently working on a vastly more powerful automatic update tool - no ETA yet - which I think could work really well here - it doesn't rely on version numbers though, so we might end up changing this implementation at a later date if we implement my system.

Even with an automatic updater, I'm thinking that there will be someway to distinguish one version from another.

Yeah, in my case it's a unique string similar to a Git hash - though how user friendly that is remains to be seen. Ideally it's not something the user would need to worry about.
