More or less. Many things freecol user actions implicitly use the currently active unit, and when the action completes we have to decide whether to select a new active unit...

"it crashes" is not a useful bug report. Obviously it does not do that for us. If you tell us pretty much nothing we are left guessing what your problem...

I think this is the wrong approach. The description is a translatable string and should be in the messages file. The author could just be an optional field in Map.
