UX improvement suggestion: Color scheme and formatting for lists and tags
There seems to be a discrepancy in the color scheme used for lists and tags in the main app vs widgets. If a task has lists or tags, it is displayed with a uniform color in the main app, whereas in the widgets, the tags and lists are of a different color from the remaining text (which is really helpful in making them stand out).
Can the same color scheme be implemented in the main app?
Alternately, in order to make the task list more "readable", would it be possible to have one color for lists and another for tags, and only while displaying the tasks in the main window and widget, the first "@" and "+" be suppressed?
That is, a task which reads: Meet +Dave at @Work tomorrow will be displayed in the widget (and main window) as Meet Dave at Work tomorrow with Dave and Work colored differently. (For lists such as @@Work, the display would be @Work).
Even considering UI updates already gives me headaches (theming sucks on Android). But will consider this,
It should help a lot to visually parse the screen content.
I suggest a background color for tags and another for lists, like in sleek app here.
This seems like a low cost/high benefit request, and it will make using the app more pleasant. So, I hope you consider doing it. 😀
Since Sleek was mentioned (as semi-adverts) in two threads, I too a look to see how well it would work as a windows partner for simpletask. Sleek does look very promising with a few pitfalls: pitfall 1: - no easy way to enter threshold dates from task creation pitfall2: - no way at the moment to save views/sort order/filters as a set
Sleek also muddles filters and views - a lot of stuff in the view menu (whether hidden tasks are shown and what is shown in relation to date are part of the filter not view -- this causes confusion.
Every todo.txt app on every platform so far is inferior to simpletask which sets the best model for almost everything, but sleek looks pretty promising. The coloured tags are fairly nice, but not essential. Overall I would love it if the sleek developer would learn from simpletask.
I also think it important that todo.txt developers are not tempted to change the sort order of the actual database, because this is bad news for version control and comparison especially across apps.
@aubreyz
I am a user of both (no relation with either developer, by the way). Sleek is still young and I agree with you that it still needs some features (like saved filters) and fine-tuning. OTOH, Simpletask has gone a long way in terms of feature maturity but still need some polishing to be honest.
These "touches" may seem small and unimportant when compared with other enhancements/structural changes/refactoring/etc, but they are as important (or even more important) for a smooth user experience. Like I said, high benefit/low cost, but tech-minded people tend to overlook them! :)
I totally agree with you on not messing with the line order in the file.
I'm also using both sleek and simpletask. While I really like both of them there are two things bother me about simpletask. One is it doesn't support following the system (dark/light) theme (which I already commented to the corresponding issue) and the other is this one. Lists(contexts) and tags(projects) are not very distinguishable and hard to spot. They have a slightly lighter color than the body of the task but it isn't helpful enough. Having them in different colors e.g. blue for lists and green for tags or something like that would really help. Or having different background colors like Sleek does on desktop. I agree with @t214c . These small touches makes a great difference
