Feature Request - Disallow Container Overlap Preference/Option

  • Firefox Version: 96.0.3 (64-bit)

In certain circumstances it is less than ideal or frustrating when currently in a container and a link is encountered that is bound to another container which then opens a new tab in that container. The nature of protective isolation prevents continuity of expected behavior.

One such example is visiting a site in a personal container which ends up driving into a purchase at which time engages Paypal. If Paypal is mapped to a Finance container then any activity in the new tab such as carrying out the login to pay no longer can conduct the callback to the previous shopping page to complete the transaction.

Another example would be starting the day with Microsoft Outlook (EvilCorp container) for work which needs SSO which usually engages with a Work container to login before flipping back once again to the EvilCorp container. I've had some weeks where this 1-2-3 container hop has caused a glitch that took some waiting to allow caches to clear for reasons unknown.

In some situations the behavior of opening to the mapped container specified for that domain is ideal, but there should be some preference or option available to make a choice.

A proposal to this is to either

  • Disable a specific container from allowing to open any new container as a new tab or override of existing container. For example when in a Banking container no link can take you out of the Banking container no matter the circumstances. This setting should be allowed to be enabled or disabled in settings.
  • Provide a setting for multi-container selection which gives immunity for a specified container to not open any other container that was selected. The UI for this I would imagine could be quite ugly after only a handful of containers exist. I don't have any great suggestion to get around that other than maybe it be an advanced setting available with JSON.
