Route handlers executing slowly

I've got several traces from newrelic indicating that the route handlers/prerequisites for updating elements or getting project pages can take thousands of milliseconds to finish. This doesn't include connections to id.webmaker.org and postgre, which execute quickly <10ms in these cases.
