Design ways to deal with offline data connection

Let’s design some things that the app can do to still be of value when user is currently offline.

This issue might be split into future specific issues. At this point, it’s still too early to tell.

Some early thoughts:

  • Easter eggs, mini games
  • Encouraging, quirky messages a la Slack
  • Factoids (do you know that the IRON MAN triathlon started right here in Kona?)
  • Cache information about the area you’re currently in, that’s only presented when you’re offline (Wikipedia article would be a good candidate for this)
  • Accurate forecast for the next day or two ahead, so you can still prepare for your trip
  • A list of towns or categories you’d like to see when you’re next online. We’ll fetch it the next time you get internet connectivity.
  • Something to read (Longreads?)

offline

Some more ideas:

  • To-do list: an open text field for what I want to do tomorrow and never got to do today. We save your list and try to do keyword search based on it when you next get internet.
  • Postcard: being offline means that it’s the perfect time to create that perfect postcard. Encourage user to take photos and add a short text to it. When they get internet, we’ll send them to others (or to themselves) as a nice keepsake.
