Mozilla VPN app is slow while performing some actions on MacOS

Affected versions:

• 2.10.0 (2.202209121724);

Tested Platforms:

• MacOS 11.6;

Prerequisites:

• Have Mozilla VPN app installed and opened;

• Have a FxA account with an active subscription for Mozilla VPN;

• Be signed in;

Steps to reproduce:

1. Navigate to Settings - VPN tips and tricks screen;
2. Start a tutorial and finalize it, while observing the behavior;
3. Navigate to Settings - System preferences - Language;
4. Observe the behavior;

Expected result:

• The navigation within the client is not slow;

Actual result:

• General slowness of the app can be observed for some of the actions within the app;

Notes:

• The issue is more visible when there is a screen with a scrollable content or when navigating between screens and it is not always reporducing with the same steps;

• See the attached video and logs (check the logs at about 15:25);

I tried to reproduce this today and I was not able to on MacOS. This is probably an intermittent, since Basti (Sebastian) Streich mentioned he did experience it in the past days.

I wonder if we can instrument the errors seen on the logs attached here (the qUncompress one and the Shader one), because that is the only I can think of to figure the prevalence of this issue. However I am not even sure they are the culprit of the sloweness… Yeah, sorry for the lack of answers 😅

I also just randomly started experiencing it (and I can’t get it to stop 😢) - it is INCREDIBLY slow to startup for me (like ~3 seconds of white screen). Attached video and logs

Since Matt’s logs do not mention the same shader error’s as Bianca, that is probably unrelated and so instrumenting that is probably not gonna tell us much about the prevalence of this issue. It might be possible for us to instrument how long each view takes to load on each platform, I can investigate this a bit.

Owen Kirby / Santiago Andrigo, I am able to experience the general slowness of the app / delay on Mozilla VPN 2.13.0 (2.202301061832), using Windows 11 / MacOS 12.6.1.

This is usually visible when accessing the VPN tips and tricks screen, and also during the tutorial. I am attaching a video where you can see the delay in loading the content of certain screens (the CPU usage does not exceed 30%).

This is also present in the IAA screens, while entering and erasing characters from the email / password fields or when transitioning between IAA screens.

Lesley Norton, yes, I am still able to reproduce this while using the 2.15 RC - 2.15.0 (2.202305231658) - on macOS 12.6.1.

The slowness / delay can be observed while going through a tutorial / accessing a screen with scrollable content / when opening the testing speed screen. Also, sometimes it takes a few seconds for the client to respond to a click.

Beatriz Rizental Machado, verified this on Mozilla VPN 2.16.0 (2.202306232214), using macOS 12.6.6 and now the client is significantly faster after the fix.

However, a certain delay can be observed while going through a tutorial or when the “Select location” screen is opened. I am attaching a video.
